Atiku $500,000 Payment: What the ICC Mambilla Tribunal Findings Mean for His 2027 Presidential Bid
Fresh questions have emerged about former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar following findings from an International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) tribunal in Paris concerning a $500,000 payment made to his then-wife, Jennifer Douglas, in 2003.
The payment was made by Leno Adesanya, promoter of Sunrise Power, while the company was pursuing the Mambilla Hydroelectric Power Project.
Adesanya told the tribunal that the payment was part of a foreign-exchange transaction carried out for Atiku. However, the tribunal said he did not provide documents showing the underlying naira payment, exchange rate, instructions or commercial purpose of the transaction.
The tribunal also noted the timing: the $500,000 was transferred in January 2003, while Sunrise’s purported Mambilla contract was awarded in May of the same year.
The tribunal described the circumstances as raising “significant red flags.”
However, the tribunal did not find that Atiku was convicted or indicted for corruption, nor did it establish that he used his government position to secure the Mambilla contract for Sunrise.
The development nevertheless raises questions about the source and purpose of the $500,000, why it was paid to Atiku’s wife, and whether the transaction was connected to the Mambilla project.
As Atiku seeks the presidency in 2027 under the ADC, the unanswered questions could become an important part of public scrutiny of his political record and credibility.
